We use two main types of functional appliances:

Twin Block

The twin block appliance consists of two removable braces, one for the top teeth and one for the lower teeth. We use the twin block applliance when most of the adult teeth have erupted.

Palatal Expanders

Palatal expanders create more space in a child's mouth by gradually widening the upper jaw. Although this may sound scary, it's really quite easy, both to do and to tolerate. That's because the upper jaw actually develops as two separate halves that don't completely fuse together until sometime after puberty. Before that happens, the two bones can gently be separated and stabilised over a period of several months.

It normally takes a week to get used to a functional brace. If worn correctly, they are extremely effective and get terrific results.

Are functional appliances suitable for everyone?
Functional appliances are most often used for children, and are considered most successful during the adolescent growth spurt - between the ages of 11 and 14 in boys and between 10 and 13 in girls. However, functional appliances can also be used at other times depending on each individual case.
Can I remove my functional appliance?
Functional appliances are removable, but should only be taken out for cleaning to maximise the effectiveness of the treatment. Your orthodontist will advise you how to remove it carefully. Try not to move it with your tongue as this could damage the appliance.
Is the treatment painful?
As with most orthodontic treatment, you will likely feel some discomfort for the first few days after fitting, and each time your appliance is adjusted. This is temporary and can be managed with over the counter painkillers.
How long will treatment take?
Your treatment time will vary depending on the severity of your case. Most functional appliance treatment is completed in around 9-12 months, but you may be advised to continue to wear it at night for a while.
